Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes!

Today we did some maths homework, focusing on addition. Judit´s first worksheet required her to add up the sums and colour the spaceships red if the result was an equal number. We used Pencils to help learn the difference between odd and even numbers, so she could easily see the difference.  Judit kept using the pencils on her own to see if the result was odd or even. She quickly got the hang of it!
Sara worked on a two-sided worksheet where she had to join the boats to the matching one that had  the same answers. She didn´t quite see they were the same sums, just in reverse, at first, so I made her work out each sum until she also quickly got the idea! I encouraged her to keep answering the sums though, to help her maths.

Both of their next worksheets were a little silimar, working on halving things. The sheets were also about Hens, eggs and chicks! Which is good, as it shall help them with their business!

After working on Maths, I took the girls outside to look at a Tree. I got them to name as many parts as they could, but they only knew the roots and leaves! I then drew a picture and taught them all the parts, and I am going to get them new books so they can each copy it out and start to look at other objects. It´s a great way for them to remember and learn new words, mixed with a little science!

We also learnt the song "head, shoulders, knees and toes!" to find a fun way to work on remembering body parts!

I then wanted to work on enchancing the girl´s imagination and creativity. I told them that I was going to draw a head on a piece of paper, then fold it and Sara would draw some arms and then Judit would finish with the legs. It took a few goes for them to stop drawing humans and questioning why I wasn´t, but once they got hang of it they didn´t want to stop and started getting more creative! We had hearts instead of heads, and mermaid tails instead of legs! We are going to use these characters to play a silimar game in the future, only this time, instead of drawings we´re going to practice our writing and make a story with these characters!

Orenga i alfàbrega

Fa temps que volíem orenga i alfàbrega al jardí perquè ens agraden molt les pizzes i la pasta amb salsa pesto. Ahir vam anar a casa la tieta i com que tenen vivers, són horticultors professionals, ens van regalar un munt de flors i plantes aromàtiques i avui les hem plantat per un racó del jardí.

La primavera és molt agraïda, a l´hort i al jardí tot llueix, collim moltes patates, carabassons, cebes, maduixes, bledes i enciams.

En Jordi s´ha atrevit per primer cop a pujar per les escales de fusta i els jocs d´escalada i equilibri tot sol, estava molt content i la Sara i la Judit l´animaven amb una especie de cant africà: arra arra arra...

Tesis sobre el homeschooling

Carlos Cabo és catedràtic d´institut i professor associat de la universitat d´Oviedo. Acaba de publicar la seva tesis sobre el homeschooling a Espanya i l´ha penjat a la seva web

És una de les primeres tesis que parlen del homeschooling a Espanya, parla de la historia del homeschooling, dels inicis, de les diferentes associacions.

Dedica un capitol important als diferents motius que tenen les families per desescolaritzar o per fer escola a casa des d´un bon principi. Parla de motius pedagògics, ètics-morals, socio-relacionals, socio-afectius, ideològico-religiosos, polítics...

Parla de la socialització, dels avantatges i desavantatges de fer escola a casa, dels diferents models educatius dins el homeschooling, flexischooling, unschooling, famílies més académiques, famílies més lliures...

Fa especial émfasis en la falta de reconeixement social i la manca de regulació per part de l´estat que no hauria de retrasar més la normalització d´aquesta model educatiu.

"El homeschooling no preten ser substitut de l´escola, ha de ser considerat una opció rica en propostes, capaç d´aportar nous punts de vista sobre l´educació en base a principis com el compromís personal, la llibertat d´aprenentatge, la humanització de les relacions i el respecte a la diversitat" extret de les conclusions finals de la Tesis que us recomano llegir.

Catalan to English! Helping the new Au Pair!

Hello! I´m Hannah! (Or Hana/Hani!), I´m the new Au Pair after Jo! Today the girls wanted to start with Science; so they found a page about the difference between Living and Non-Living things, and how you can tell that difference. We then made a list of things to sort into "Living" and "Non-Living". They did this very quickly and got them all right!

We then looked at the difference between how Plants and Animals "breathe" and absorb water. So we went Outside and pulled up some weeds to look their roots. After we finished learning about Plants, Judit wanted to do some Maths. She found a page on measuring the time, focusing on the length of a minute. She had to jump, climb the stairs, say their name and twirl as many times as she could in a minute! She counted how many she did each time and we wrote it on a bit of paper.

Sara wanted to work on some more Sciene, so she read it aloud to me.

The girls then decided I need to work on some homework! They made me a Catalan to English book so I could work on it before they tested me! If I passed the test, they´d give me a present.  Judit wrote me the book, listing Animals in Catalan on one page and then English on the next page. They then did the same for Colours, and told me they´d write a few more for me each day. Luckily, I passed the colours test, and they gave me a beautiful drawing of myself, and another of two fairies!

Sembrem blat de moro

Panís per les gallines i per menjar nosaltres també, al vapor, a la brassa. Sembrat i collit a casa més ecològic impossible. Els ous seran més bons i la Sara i la Judit tindran menys despeses al no haver de comprar tan pinso. Amb l´ajuda d´una corda i unes canyes hem sembrat el blat de moro en línia recta, el papa els ha ajudat, però qui ha sembrat han estat les nenes... entre dos i tres grans per forat, no sé si en algún n´hi ha menys, n´hi ha més o no hi ha cap, oi que no passa res mama? Aquesta ha estat la reflexió final de la Sara...

Estan millorant els cops de drive i revés amb la raqueta, han de vigilar la posició dels peus i la posició de la raqueta.

Aquesta tarda hem anat a la biblioteca a tornar els contes que llegim durant la setmana i els resums, la Mireia i la Susana ja ens esperen i sempre ens donen sorpreses per pintar, retallar i treballar. Gràcies!

Collim patates

Diumenge vam collir les primeres patates que vam sembrar ja fa molts mesos i que el fred de l´hivern va matar i van tornar a reviure... A més a més tenim carxofes, maduixes i carabassons. És divertit collir patates perquè s´amagen sota la terra i la Sara i la Judit reien a cor que vols cada cop que en trobaven una, alguna inclús de molt gran!

Volem sembrar panís per les gallines, perquè el pinso ecològic és molt car i no sabem del cert si és o no és tan ecològic... Així que avui el pagés veí ens ha passat el tractor per llaurar la terra i estovar-la. Ara ja podem sembrar el panís!

So here is my last blog entry!!! :(
Time for me to move on to new things and for the girls to have a new au pair, I'm not moving far so I will still be able to see the kids now and then, but I'm really going to miss seeing them grow and learn and change, especially Jordi who I've known since he was born, and he's the one who changes the quickest!
I've had the most brilliant two years here with Maria, Jordi, Sara, Judith and Jordi, and I know the next au pair is a very lucky girl to come to such a nice family, I hope she will enjoy it as much as I have!

We have been doing our favoutrite things this week to say goodbye, cycling, cake making, playing connect-four, running around the garden like loonies, climbing things at the beach, AND doing english homework! I don't have photos/videos of everything but here are plenty to keep you going:

Rrrrrrr... L´éxit de la logopedia

La Judit de cop i volta ha pronunciat la Rr forta i vibrant! Després de 8 mesos de classes amb la logopeda i de practicar molts jocs de bufar, d´articulació dels llavis i de la llengua, ha valgut la pena! Ja ens van avisar que era un procés llarg i que no esperéssim resultats a curt termini. Com sempre la constància, el treball i l´esforç donen fruit. Estem molt contents!

Avui hem portat els gatets a la protectora i ens sentim una mica apagats i la Mika també deu estar una mica trista, però ella és salvatge i a la protectora no la volen. Aquí  on vivim n´hi ha molts de gats salvatges, són importants per l´eco-sistema, són animals lliures, autèntics, i no deixo de pensar que els homeschoolers també som una mica salvatges, lliures, diferents...

D´un retall, dos vestits

Arriba la calor i la roba lleugera, els vestits sense mànigues i les sandàlies. La tieta en va donar molts retalls de roba i avui en hem engrescat a fer un parell de vestits. Som autodidàctis i una costurera professional trobaria molts i molts defectes a la nostra manera de fer, però els hem acabat i ja els han volgut estrenar deseguida. Els agrada cosir a màquina i fer les canilles de fil, enfilar l´agulla i tallar la roba amb les estisores. El que més por els fa les agulles de cap que poso per prendre mides, llavors és queden quietes, no gosen bellugar-se, tenen por de punxar-se!

Making Posters

This morning we decided to make some posters to decorate the school room!
Judith has made one about the different 'to's: TO; TWO; and TOO:

 

Sara made a poster of the tense work whe did yesterday, look how pleased she is with her poster!

We also did some practice telling the time today, Judith has almost got the hour, half-past, quarter-past and quarter-to mastered whilst Sara is working on the hour and half-past. Here's a little video:

Fer pa

Ja fa molt temps que ens vam iniciar en fer el pa a casa. És tan senzill com el nom, p a. Mig quilo de farina, 250 d´aigua, 25 grams de llevat i una mica de sal. Es barreja en un bol aconseguint una masa homogenea i es deixa reposar fins que dobli el volum. S´amasa de nou i es formen els pans, els bastonets, la pizza o el pa rodó, el que es vulgui. Es deixa reposar de nou fins que torni a doblar el volum i s´enforna amb el forn ben calent fins que es torra. Si teniu amasadora perfecte, i sinó amb les mans funciona molt bé.

Avui la Judit ha volgut fer xapates, l´única variant en la recepta és l´oli verge d´oliva, per mig quilo de farina 50 grams d´oli.

Diuen que el truc del pa és el llevat, si voleu un bon pa compreu el llevat a la forneria, hi ha inclús que es fan el seu propi llevat, amb barreja de farina integral, farina de força i aigua. Ho deixen fermentar d´un dia per l´altre i van alimentant la barreja amb nova farina. Així fins al cap de tres dies. A mi no em va resultar perquè el pa no em va pujar tant, però hi ha molta gent que sí que li surt... potser no ho vam fer prou bé, o la farina no era prou bona...
